1998 Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket 20 Watt Valve Combo Amplifier – Footswitch Included
Here we have a superb late 1990s Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket 20 watt all-valve combo amplifier, presented in excellent condition and fully tested in our workshop. These compact USA-made Mesa combos have become something of a cult classic thanks to their incredible versatility, outstanding build quality and unmistakable Boogie tonal character.
Condition-wise, this example has clearly been very well cared for throughout its life. There are only a few light cosmetic marks and signs of use, all perfectly in keeping with a carefully used amplifier of this age. The controls, switches and electronics all function exactly as they should and the amp is ready to go straight into use.
The Subway Rocket delivers everything you would hope for from a classic Mesa Boogie design — rich harmonic complexity, outstanding touch sensitivity and an impressive amount of tonal flexibility from a highly portable combo format. The clean channel produces warm, full-bodied American-style cleans with excellent clarity and headroom, whilst the gain channel delivers thick, singing overdrive tones with superb sustain and articulation. From smooth blues and classic rock through to heavier saturated lead tones, the amp retains exceptional note definition and responsiveness throughout.
The contour control is especially effective, allowing quick access to a more aggressive mid-scooped voice ideal for modern rock sounds, whilst the highly interactive EQ controls genuinely shape the amplifier in a meaningful and musical way. Despite its modest 20 watt output, this is a surprisingly loud and gig-capable amplifier with more than enough volume for rehearsals, studio work and smaller live settings.
