1980 Moog Prodigy 336BX – Early European Export Model

Here’s a particularly nice example of one of Moog’s most enduring analogue synthesizers: a 1980 Moog Prodigy, European export Model 336BX, with serial number 2469x.

The Prodigy was introduced in 1979 as a compact, more accessible instrument within the Moog range, while retaining the essential analogue architecture and unmistakable sound for which the company had become famous. The specification centres around two oscillators, Moog’s characteristic low-pass filter, modulation facilities and a 32-note keyboard, all housed in a relatively compact and very playable instrument.

This appears to be an early example of the Prodigy. It does not have the CV and Gate connections found on later examples, which is consistent with the earlier specification. We would, however, recommend that buyers regard the serial number and lack of these connections as indicators of an early version rather than relying on the serial number alone as definitive proof of the exact production date or specification.

Sonically, the Prodigy is unmistakably Moog. The two oscillators can produce wonderfully fat and powerful bass sounds, strong analogue leads and everything from relatively simple, rounded tones to much more aggressive and heavily saturated sounds. The filter has that familiar Moog character, with plenty of warmth and depth and the ability to become extremely expressive as the resonance and modulation are increased. Despite being a comparatively straightforward synthesizer, it is capable of a surprisingly broad range of musical sounds and remains an exceptionally immediate instrument to use.

This particular example is in very good overall condition and has been fully tested by us. Everything functions as it should, including the keyboard, controls and synthesizer circuitry. The wooden cabinet has faded slightly with age, but this is entirely in keeping with an instrument of this period and, overall, it is in considerably better condition than many examples we have encountered.

The 336BX designation identifies this as the European export version, and the instrument is suitable for the European mains specification.

There is something particularly appealing about an early Prodigy. It has the simplicity and immediacy of a classic analogue instrument, combined with the unmistakable character of the Moog sound. These have become highly regarded among synthesizer players and collectors, and good original examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

A very nice example of this classic Moog synthesizer, fully tested, in excellent working order and ready for many more years of musical use.
