PRODUCT DETAILS

A seriously rare and highly collectible mid-80s Fender here in the form of this 1986 Fender Standard Performer Bass finished in Brown Sunburst. Built in Japan during one of Fender’s most interesting and experimental periods, the Standard Performer series has developed a real cult following over the years thanks to its distinctive offset styling, unique electronics, and incredibly playable feel. Japanese-built Fender instruments from this era are renowned for their quality and craftsmanship, and this is a fantastic example of exactly why they continue to be so highly regarded.

Finding one in this condition is difficult enough, but finding one with this level of provenance takes it into a completely different category altogether.

This particular example was formerly owned by Paul Gray of The Damned and has been used extensively both live and in the studio throughout its life. Despite its working history, the bass remains in excellent overall condition and has clearly been very well looked after. There are a handful of small dings and scratches around the lower edges of the body as you would expect from a professionally used instrument of this age, but nothing excessive or structural in any way. The finish still presents beautifully and the bass has aged exactly how you would hope a vintage Fender should.

The neck feels superb in the hand and the instrument plays exceptionally well right across the board. The frets still have plenty of life left in them and the bass delivers all the punch, clarity, and unmistakable character you would expect from an original Fender from this era. Everything appears to be original and untouched, making this an especially appealing example for both collectors and players alike.

Included with the bass is a non-original hard case which was used by Paul Grey for numerous tours with The Damned over the years, adding yet another layer of genuine history to an already special instrument. The sale will also include a signed Letter of Authenticity from Paul Grey to the new owner confirming provenance.

A genuinely rare opportunity to acquire an increasingly hard-to-find Japanese-built Fender Standard Performer Bass with undeniable punk rock heritage and real-world touring history behind it.

As is standard practice with any new arrival in store, this very cool Fender Standard Performer Bass has been through the trusted hands of our team in our onsite workshop to ensure it is in tip-top shape for its new home and owner!
