PRODUCT DETAILS

Beautiful 1937 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe Sunburst in Excellent Condition!

Another jaw dropping piece of Gibson history has landed through our door, and this one has us all speechless. This is a stunning 1939 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe 'Lap Steel' in a beautiful sunburst. Leroy George Alfred "Roy" Smeck was an American musician. His skill on the banjo, guitar, and ukulele earned him the nickname "The Wizard of the Strings". His breakthrough came in 1923 as the accompanist to singer Olga Myra on the Keith-Orpheum Vaudeville circuit

Roy Smeck's endorsement with Gibson began in 1934, and with that came two signature Hawaiian models, the "Stage De Luxe" and the "Radio Grande." Both shared same body dimensions and Appalachian Spruce/Brazilian Rosewood combination as the Advanced Jumbo.

Unlike many Roy Smeck models found on todays market this instrument retains its original square neck design along with it's tall nut set-up ready to resonate the beautiful Hawaiian dulcet tones once more. Many Roy Smeck models found on todays market have been converted due to the rarity of Advanced Jumbo's pre 1936, making this Stage De Luxe something very special indeed.

After reviewing its included original purchase receipt from Davies Music Store Newport South Wales, it looks only to have had one or two owners. The actual hire purchase agreement is dated 21st January 1950 and it cost its former owner a princely sum of £26.50 pence. As you can see from our images it has been exceptionally well kept by its previous owner & and their family. This guitar has an unquestionable providence and it really is a piece of historical interest.

This fine instrument is instrument knocking on 86 years old, there are one or two very small signs of play wear & ageing. But even these are at a bare minimum compared to other examples currently on the market. Also in our images you will see the original Gibson Kalamazoo factory label remains inside the body (quite a rare find) and its Serial Number at the butt of the neck reading '443 C' that indicates its year as 1939.

As is standard practice with any new arrival in store, this beautiful Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe has been through the trusted hands of our team in our onsite workshop to ensure it is in tip-top shape for its new home and owner!

As previously mentioned our 1937 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe comes with its original sales invoice as well as its original hard case which is alos in excellent condition.

We are an appointment-only store. All instruments are handled by Motomusic employees only.

We are always happy to consider quality part exchange instruments here.
