A beautifully appointed 2003 Gibson Custom Shop L-4CES in Vintage Sunburst, representing one of Gibson’s finest modern interpretations of the classic carved jazz archtop. Built in the Custom Shop to traditional L-4CES specifications, this premium hollow body features a hand-carved solid spruce top with laminate figured maple back and sides, delivering the warm, articulate acoustic character and rich amplified voice these models are celebrated for.
Finished in a deeply elegant, vibrant Vintage Sunburst, this example remains in very good condition for its age, showing only light surface marks and the occasional small ding consistent with a carefully used professional instrument. It presents extremely well overall and has clearly been looked after throughout its life.
The neck profile is comfortable and reassuring in the hand, with an excellent playing action and very little fret wear to the original medium jumbo frets, which remain nicely crowned and polished. The guitar has been fully workshop inspected and is currently strung with 12-gauge flatwound strings, perfectly suited to the instrument’s smooth, traditional jazz character. The fingerboard carries Gibson’s classic 12" radius for an effortlessly familiar feel.
High-end Custom Shop appointments include the engraved L-4 “T” trapeze tailpiece, multiple binding, gold hardware and split parallelogram inlays, all combining to give the instrument the refined elegance expected from Gibson’s upper-tier archtop line.
Electronics are provided by a pair of Gibson ’57 Classic humbuckers with gold covers, offering warm vintage output with exceptional clarity and balance, whether played clean or pushed slightly harder.
A second internal label confirms the air chamber was carved, tested, tuned and approved by renowned Gibson luthier James W. Hutchins — a particularly desirable detail seen on high-grade Custom Shop archtops from this period.
Supplied complete with its original Gibson Custom Art hard-shell case, certificate of authenticity and original paperwork. The case itself also remains in very good condition.
