The Cornell Romany 12 Reverb is a seriously impressive all-valve combo, hand-built in the UK by Dennis Cornell and his team for players who value exceptional tone, simplicity and proper old-school construction.
The Romany 12 is a 10-watt, single-ended Class A design built around a 6L6 output valve, with 2 x ECC83 and 1 x ECC81 in the preamp. It features a 12" Jensen speaker, spring reverb, Hi input, Volume, Bass, Middle and Treble controls, together with an EQ Cut and a four-position output reduction system allowing the amp to be used from full 10-watt output down to very low-volume settings. The cabinet is beautifully constructed from plywood and finished in classic tweed with an oxblood grille and leather handle.
The build quality is exactly what you would expect from one of Britain's most respected amplifier builders. These are proper hand-built amplifiers, using carefully selected components and traditional construction techniques rather than mass-production methods. Dennis Cornell’s reputation has attracted players including Eric Clapton, Gary Moore, Hank Marvin, Wilko Johnson, Andy Fairweather Low and Robin Trower.
Tonally, the Romany 12 is warm, immediate and wonderfully responsive. Clean sounds have a lovely richness and depth, while increasing the volume brings in a smooth, natural valve overdrive with plenty of harmonic character. The 12" speaker gives the amp a bigger, more open sound than its compact dimensions might suggest, and the output reduction system means you can enjoy that natural breakup without simply overwhelming the room.
The spring reverb is lush and musical, while the EQ Cut provides another useful voice, taking the amplifier from warm and rounded through to more focused and driven tones.
