1978 Marshall JMP 4140 Club & Country – 100-Watt 2×12" Combo – Excellent Condition
A beautifully preserved 1978 Marshall JMP 4140 Club & Country one of the more unique and overlooked designs from the late ’70s. It’s a big, clean, articulate 100-watt combo with two channels, lush reverb, and that unmistakable Marshall authority. A serious amp with a surprising amount of refinement, built for players who needed headroom, clarity, and volume without losing the warmth and character of a proper valve circuit.
This one is in excellent condition throughout. The tolex is clean, the grille cloth sits straight, and all the hardware has aged honestly. No major damage, no questionable repairs just the gentle signs of a well-loved vintage combo that has made it through the decades with dignity. Everything works exactly as it should. The controls are responsive, both channels sound wonderful, and the reverb and boost features still feel lively and musical.
Tonal character is exactly what made the 4140 special. It has that huge, open clean sound that stays solid even at high volume, yet it still moves into that warm, blooming breakup when pushed. Pedals sit beautifully in front of it, and the dual-channel layout gives you more flexibility than most Marshalls of the period. The pair of 12s deliver plenty of body and projection the classic late-’70s Marshall combination of depth, punch, and clarity.
The history of this model isn’t just trivia. Players like Alex Lifeson spent time with the 4140, drawn to its headroom and its ability to stay articulate on big stages. Stories also circulate about Stevie Ray Vaughan using one for its clean power and feel. It’s the kind of amp musicians gravitated toward when they needed volume and purity, not just distortion.
This one also comes with its original slip cover and the original footswitch rare to see both still together after forty-plus years. A small detail, but it completes the picture.
A wonderfully preserved piece of Marshall history. Powerful, musical, and ready for its next chapter.
